Teen Turns Favourite Sport into a Fundraiser

While many Canadian kids are slapping hockey pucks around,

Ethan Hobbs loves curling and prefers to deliver rocks. “Curling is

like a game of chess. It requires a lot of strategy and skill,” said the

13-year-old patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Canada.

Ethan has turned his favourite sport into a hospital fundraiser.

Organizing a Curling Tournament

With the help of family and friends, Ethan is organizing the second

annual Toques and Mittens Bonspiel, taking place next February at

the Chatham Granite Club in Ontario. Last year’s inaugural event

raised an impressive $3,000.

“Organizing a Bonspiel is a lot of work,” said Ethan. “But when

people learned we were raising funds for Shriners Hospitals for

Children, we heard a lot of positive comments, like ‘Shriners does

such great things for kids, and Shriners make miracles happen.’”

Both Hobbs Brothers Are Grateful Patients

Ethan and his older brother, Eric, are both being treated at the

Canada Shriners Hospital. Ethan has pes planus, or flat feet, a very

painful condition. Eric is being treated for idiopathic scoliosis, or

curvature of the spine.

“I am proud of my accomplishments. I am proud to be sponsored

by the Ahcom Shriners Club. I am grateful to the Mocha Shriners for

sponsoring my brother*,” Ethan said. “It is an honour to be known as

‘a kid helping other kids.’”

*The Shriners fraternity often sponsors children seeking care, but

sponsorship is not necessary to be a patient of Shriners Hospitals

for Children.
